C. Rhetorical Situation: Stance

Stance can often be a difficult aspect of the rhetorical situation to display. While it refers to the attitude of the writer, in some technical documents it may not be evident. During the technical description and lab report I had difficulty with stance because these seemed like purely impersonal papers. The technical description was describing a device in my field of engineering and seemed rather difficult to impart my perspective through the document, while, in my reflection I had more freedom to talk about the importance of the device to me. I had similar feelings when writing my lab report. In such a technical document it was difficult to impart my persona. In the proposal it is easier to convey a stance, since it is directed to an audience to convey a need.
